Department Best Practices
Unlock Your Learning Potential
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering provides Research labs for pre-final students. The students get a platform to explore and enhance their research skills, as well as to gain an understanding of the latest trends in computer science.
For every student studying pre-final year classes, the department organised a two-hour lab session per week. The Students are able to present topics in their own interest areas at the end of the semester. With the help of Latex, each student creates a paper and a set of presentation slides that follow the IEEE standard.
It provides students with a structured environment where they can experiment, collaborate and share ideas. Students can also take advantage of the lab’s schedule to plan their research projects ahead of time and make sure that they are on track with their studies.
The research lab provides pre-final students with a unique opportunity to develop their skills in a supportive environment, while also being exposed to new ideas and trends that will help them excel in their future careers.

Innovative Teaching & Learning Method
Innovative teaching and learning methods refer to creative approaches used to engage learners, promote critical thinking, and enhance learning outcomes. These methods aim to move away from traditional rote learning and encourage students to think outside the box.
Learn Through Skit
Class conducted a skit to demonstrate working of several topics in the course System Software. The skit helped students to understand the topic in detail. Students were divided into six groups with each group having seven to eight members. Different topics where selected different topics from the syllabus This method promotes student autonomy, fosters creativity, and helps students develop a deeper understanding of concepts.
CONTENTS PRESENTED
- How linking loader performs its operations,
- How a linkage editor works.
- Working of Macro processor.
- Difference between application software and system software.
- Algorithm of absolute loader.
- Automatic Library Search.
Students were exuberant and absorbing the extract of the subject. It was amusing and fascinating to capture the moments.
In conclusion, innovative teaching and learning methods aim to create more engaging, interactive, and personalized learning experiences for students. These methods promote student-centered learning, critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration and creativity, all of which are essential skills for success.
Share & Learn
The courses that involve both theory and problems are learned through the Share & Learn. It is a classroom active learning strategy in which students work on activities, first individually, then in pairs and finally as the whole class. Share & Learn allows students to express their reasoning, reflect on their understanding and obtain prompt feedback on their learning.
It is a progressive strategy in involving the following steps:
- Think : Students think independently about the question that has been posed, forming ideas of their own.
- Pair : Students are grouped in pairs to discuss their thoughts. This step allows students to articulate their ideas and to consider those of others.
- Share : Students pairs share their ideas with a larger group, such as the whole class or a group smaller than an entire class.
The following subject used Share & Learn :-
- Graph Theory
- Data Structures
This type of learning strategy is very effective as the knowledge of each student is shared amongst everyone.
Flipped Classroom
Most of the subjects for our course are taught by using the flipped classroom teaching method. It is a type of teaching method where students first study theory by themselves as a pre-assigned homework and then learn in the classroom by working on exercises.
This blended learning model allows trainers to prioritize active learning during class time, by giving learners the training materials and presentations before the actual class. The trainer can simply share the content via a Google Classroom, email, or however training is delivered.
The following subjects used the Flipped model learning method:-
- Object Oriented Programming using JAVA
- Micro Processors and MicroControllers
- Computer Organization & Architecture
- Programming in C
- Database Management Systems
- Operating Systems
- Computer Networks
This is an effective method for teaching theory based subjects as it helps the students to understand each topic thoroughly.
Student Mentorship
Workshops were organized to help students develop their coding abilities. Students themselves served as mentors for the programmes. A few students that volunteered as mentors were Faris Basha (20CS), Ashhar Ali (20CS), Muhammed Salah K T (19CS), Fathima Fida (20CS), Fathimath Hanan KT (20CS), and Fathima Karat (20CS). Python is a high-level programming language widely used for web development, data science, artificial intelligence, and other fields. The mentorship aimed to provide a basic understanding of Python and its applications among the students.
Mentors engaged the attendees in a variety of exercises and activities during the workshop to help them remember the concepts they had learned. Students gained practical programming experience, and they were encouraged to ask questions and get answers to their doubts.
The participants were introduced to:
- Basics of programming
- How to use Python libraries for data manipulation and visualization
- OOP concepts
Seminar
Seminar is a commonly used method in almost all subjects. It has the function of bringing together small groups for recurring meetings, focusing each time on some particular subject, in which everyone present is requested to participate.
Seminar classes are meant to be interactive, with students participating in a dialogue rather than just listening to a professor and taking notes. Because of this, seminar classes are great for engaging with complex ideas.
The following subjects uses Seminar:-
- Database Management Systems
- Graph Theory
- Microprocessor and Microcontroller
- Design and Engineering
This method helps the students not only for learning the subject but it boosts several of their skills like teaching skill, improves confidence while talking to an audience. It also helps the students to understand others perspectives and latest information, and a good way of networking.
